Work in six steps: catalogue the damage by category, rank it by business impact, decide repair versus rebuild, fix the foundation before the visuals, rewrite the copy that never really said anything, and give the site a named owner so it stops degrading.

You built with an AI tool because it was fast and cheap, and for a while it worked. Then a button that used to submit a form stopped doing anything, a section that looks fine on your laptop collapsed on your phone, and a page you'd swear you never touched had different text on it than last month. That doesn't mean you made a dumb call. AI builders are legitimately good at getting something online fast; what they're bad at is holding together while the site grows, while you make changes, and while the platform underneath updates itself without asking anyone.

Step 1: What's actually broken?

Before fixing anything, catalog the damage. AI-generated sites accumulate problems in remarkably consistent categories, and sorting yours into them first keeps the cleanup from ballooning later.

Structural breaks. Overlapping layouts, elements that won't resize on mobile, sections that render in one browser and collapse in another. Most visible, usually most urgent — these decide whether visitors can use the site at all.

Dead or fragile integrations. A form submitting into the void. A booking widget that stopped syncing. A payment button wired to an account that's no longer active. SEO and technical gaps. Missing meta descriptions, scrambled heading structure, heavyweight images, no schema markup. Lock-in symptoms. You go to make a change and discover you can't: the builder won't let you touch certain elements, exporting means losing formatting, or a "simple" edit requires regenerating a whole section and praying nothing else breaks.

Walk the site page by page and file each problem into a category. Tedious? Yes (put on a podcast). It's also the step everyone skips, and skipping it is why cleanup projects sprawl — nobody scoped the damage before starting to fix it.

Step 2: Rank by business impact, not annoyance

Now sort the list by what's costing money or credibility — not by what irritates you personally every time you look at it. A footer typo is annoying. Here's the encouraging part: on most sites that feel broadly "off," categories 1 and 2 turn out to be a short list — five to ten specific items. Fixing those stops the bleeding and buys you room to plan the rest calmly.

Step 3: Repair or rebuild?

Not every AI-built site deserves a rebuild, and not every one is worth saving. The honest sorting criteria:

Repair, when the structure and content are basically sound and the problems are isolated — a few broken integrations, some layout bugs, stale copy. When the site is built on something reasonably standard rather than sealed inside a proprietary builder. When you need it functional fast and can invest properly later.

Rebuild, when the platform itself is the fight — every change is a wrestling match with the builder's limitations. When the content was never good, as opposed to merely outdated: generic value props, no differentiation, thin service pages. When new issues appear faster than old ones get fixed, which is the classic sign the foundation is the problem rather than any individual bug. And when the site carries your revenue and its conversion problems run deeper than a checklist reaches — why your website isn't converting describes what that usually looks like.

Step 4: Foundation before paint

If the verdict is repair, resist the urge to start with visuals. Work underneath first.

Understand the code before adding to it. AI-generated code tends to be a patchwork of one-off solutions that happen to coexist in their current state. Know what's reusable and what's load-bearing-but-fragile before you lean on any of it.

Then revive the integrations — forms, payments, booking, email capture — and test each end to end. Not "does the button look clickable" but "does a real submission arrive where a human will see it."

Then the mobile layout. Then the SEO basics: title tags, meta descriptions, heading hierarchy, alt text, a working sitemap. Unglamorous, fast to fix once someone actually looks, and it decides whether new visitors ever find you.

Step 5: Rewrite what was never really written

A lot of AI-generated copy technically says something while saying nothing. "We provide quality solutions tailored to your needs" is a sentence. It is not a value proposition, and every visitor's eyes slide straight off it (it's the copy equivalent of elevator music).

Go through your core pages asking one question: would a real customer, reading this, understand specifically what we do and why to pick us over the next tab? Where the honest answer is no, that page needs rewriting, not tweaking.

Order of attack: the homepage headline and opening section, where first impressions form. Service and product pages, where browsers become leads. Anything with pricing or process information, where vagueness converts directly into lost inquiries. You don't need to rewrite the whole site in a weekend — fix the pages carrying the most traffic and weight, then work down.

Step 6: How do you stop it happening again?

Here's the pattern behind almost every degraded AI site, regardless of which tool built it: nobody owned it. Generated, launched, left alone until something visibly broke — and by then several invisible things had broken first.

After cleanup, put a light structure in place. A monthly check where someone actually opens the site, submits the forms, and looks at it on a phone (send yourself a test inquiry — better you catch a dead form than a customer does). A change log, so next year you're not guessing whether something was intentional or drifted.
